The number of people employed at the Central German Airports of Leipzig/Halle and Dresden continues to grow

The growth in the number of people employed at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports continued again in 2018. 13,559 people worked at local companies, service providers, public authorities and the companies controlled by Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG at the two airports on the target date of 31 December 2018. This represented an increase of 9.5 percent compared to the previous year. The rate of growth in the fields of cargo handling and aircraft construction was far above average, while the retail and services sectors registered growth too. The companies controlled by Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG themselves employed 1,330 people, a figure that was 13.7 percent higher than the one recorded for the previous year.

Central German Airports: driving forces for development in the region

Michael Kretschmer, the State Premier of Saxony, comments, “The Central German Airports at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden are important job creators for the region. The modern infrastructure provides outstanding conditions for further investments and for attracting other companies of national importance. The Free State of Saxony is actively supporting the Central German Airports in implementing their growth strategy and is fighting to attract federal institutions like the new Cyber Security Agency to Leipzig/Halle Airport.”

Götz Ahmelmann, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG and Chairman of the Board at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports, adds, “The ongoing growth in the numbers of employees underlines the outstanding importance of Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports as driving forces for development in the business and logistics region of Central Germany. The growth figures, particularly in the fields of cargo handling and aircraft construction, make it clear that the airports are also becoming increasingly important as modern and innovative aviation and logistics sites, both nationally and internationally.”

The number of people employed at the Leipzig/Halle Airport site rose by 10.3 percent to 9,495. This means that the figure for employees has more than doubled since 2009.
The growth rate at the Dresden Airport site was 7.6 percent and the number rose to 4,064 people. This means that the figure has risen by more than 38 percent since 2009.

The long-term development in the numbers of people employed at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports is also having a positive effect on the Central German region. Tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs have been created as a result of companies settling in the area and regional employment effects.
