Central German airports conclude 3rd quarter with growth in passenger numbers

The number of passengers at Leipzig/Halle Airport in September rose by 8.2 percent compared to the same month in 2017; the figure this year was 298,706. The number of travellers passing through the airport so far in 2018 was 1,967,505; this represents an increase of 8.1 percent over the same period in the previous year.

Freight volumes at Germany’s second-largest air cargo hub grew by 3.7 percent in September to a figure of roughly 100,372 tonnes. The amount of cargo handled between January and September registered growth of 9.5 percent to approx. 906,751 tonnes when compared to the same period in 2017.

The volume of traffic in September increased by 8.6 percent to 6,911 aircraft movements.

Passenger numbers at Dresden Airport in September increased by 5.9 percent to a figure of 188,920. The number of travellers passing through the airport between January and September rose by 1.5 percent to a figure of 1,316,158 compared to the previous year.

The number of aircraft movements also continued to rise: there were 2,926 take-offs and landings at the airport in September – an increase of 10.4 percent compared to the same figure in 2017. The airport in Dresden has registered a rise in aircraft movements of 2.3 percent since the beginning of the year; the figure had reached 23,343 by the end of September.

This growth process at both the airports is largely due to the positive development in tourist traffic.

For example, the demand for flights to travel destinations in Egypt (+47 percent) and Turkey (+36 percent) was significantly higher at Leipzig/Halle Airport than in 2017. The number of people flying to Greece also increased by 55 percent.

The number of passengers flying to Egypt from Dresden Airport between January and September also increased by more than 83 percent compared to 2017. There were also significant increases in passenger numbers flying to Turkey (+59 percent) and Italy (+27 percent).
