Growing employment numbers at the Central German airports

The increase in the numbers of jobs at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports continued once again in 2017. 12,387 people were employed at local companies, service providers, public authorities and the Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG companies at the two airports on the key date of 31 December 2017. This represents an increase of 9.2 percent compared to the previous year. The freight handling and aircraft construction sectors recorded above-average growth rates.

The Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG companies themselves employed 1,170 people and this figure was therefore 4.4 percent higher than in the previous year.

The number of employees at Leipzig/Halle Airport rose by 9.2 percent to a figure of 8,609.

Dresden Airport recorded growth of 9.1 percent to a total figure of 3,778 people in employment.

“Our airports provide good jobs for more people than ever before. Positive effects are felt in the economy, tourism and employment in the whole region because of their ability to create jobs,” says Martin Dulig, Saxon State Minister for Economics, Labour and Transport, and adds, “The establishment and successful operations at research institutes and industrial companies wouldn’t have been possible without the modern airport infrastructure. Leipzig/Halle has become firmly established as one of the most important logistics regions in Germany. The DHL hub there and volumes of more than 1.1 million tonnes of transported air freight mean that the airport is the second-largest air cargo hub in Germany and the fifth largest in Europe. Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden has specialised in the conversion of Airbus passenger planes into freight aircraft – and maintenance on the A380 jets. Both Bosch and Philip Morris are planning to set up in business near Dresden Airport and therefore continue to strengthen the economic base in Saxony.”

“Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports fulfilled their role as long-term job creators for Central Germany in 2017 too. The significant growth in the numbers of employees at both the sites once again, particularly in freight traffic and aircraft manufacturing, equally underlines the regional and national economic significance of our companies. It encourages us to continue developing the airport sites as important transport and freight hubs as well as centres of excellence for key technologies,” says Johannes Jähn, Spokesman for the Board of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, summarising the situation.
