Events at Dresden Airport in the first quarter of 2018

2-6 January
Elephant, Snow Cutter-blower & Co – the Special Winter Tour

When it’s freezing and snowing outside, the Winter Service at Dresden Airport really comes into its own. With a full range of technology, the team works hard to keep air traffic moving as best it can in wintry conditions. Participants on this tour will not only get exclusive insights into our Winter Service equipment but will also find out what role the airport plays in the FIS Ski World Cup. The tour leaves from the airport information desk in the terminal. After a security check and a bus trip across the illuminated apron, you will stop off at the Winter Service hangar. On the way there, there will be opportunities to take pictures and videos of planes taking off and landing, depending on the traffic situation. You’ll also be given a behind-the-scenes look at snow production for the World Cup and you’ll find out lots of fascinating facts about its history. To round off the tour there will be a mulled wine reception on the visitor platform with a view of the illuminated runway.

7 January
Travel and Experience Day at Dresden’s biggest travel centre

Sun, sand and sea or city breaks – to herald in the New Year, Dresden’s biggest travel centre will be offering expert travel advice, accompanied by a very special winter sports event.
Top holiday tips include new non-stop flights to Athens, Bodrum (Turkey), Barcelona, Bastia (Corsica), Dubai, Lamezia Terme (Italy), Malta, Monastir (Tunisia), St Petersburg and Thessaloniki. The airlines also offer Dresden passengers a choice of practical connecting flights to cities and holiday destinations across the globe. Transfer times at hub airports are generally short, and with such a wide range of connecting flights from Dresden, there are destinations and dates to suit everyone.

While parents browse the holiday options and compare offers in peace and quiet, there will be lots of activities for kids: a biathlon laser shooting range, an ice stock rink, an ice hockey goal wall, face painting with fairytale figures and lots more besides.

As part of the FIS Ski World Cup Dresden, trials will be held to find Saxony’s fastest cross-country skier over 100 metres. To make this happen, the airport’s Winter Service will be preparing a special area of snow around 140 metres long on the area outside the terminal.
Head up to the visitor platform to get the best view of this event.
Kids keen to follow the example of the athletes will also find plenty of opportunity to get active outside the terminal.

Upcoming athletes can try out the Skitty-World Nordic Obstacle Course outside the west wing, a small, varied cross-country skiing run just for kids. Ski equipment can be hired at the venue. If there isn’t enough snow on the day, in-line skates can be used on the course. You will need to bring your own skates.

  • Terminal, 10:00-18:00
  • Early-bird discounts for summer 2018
  • Compete for the title of Saxony’s fastest cross-country skier over 100 metres

Wanderlust – the travel talks: “Namibia – Land of Contrasting Colours”
Speaker: Jörg Ehrlich

There is barely another country in Africa that is so closely intertwined with German history. Whether you’re touring in a hired car or with a small tour group, Namibia has something for everyone. Travel expert Jörg Ehrlich will guide the audience through this land of many contrasts.

Starting in the capital, Windhoek, he will travel up to the wildlife-rich north of the country and take a tour round the famous Etosha National Park. In the second half of the talk, you’ll jump more than 500 kilometres to the south to the Sossusvlei salt pan, the absolute highlight of every trip to Namibia. There are no words to describe what it feels like to stand at the foot of red dunes towering up to 300 metres high. Jörg Ehrlich has been lucky enough to experience this unique red desert in full bloom.

12 March
Wanderlust – the travel talks: “South-east Asia – Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia”
Speaker: Steffen Hoppe

Experience the magic of Thailand in the eerie light of the monsoon season and see the filigree temples and pagodas of the former royal cities of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai. Steffen Hoppe also journeys to the Candle Festival in Ubon Ratchathani, explores the culinary delights of the Isaan region and visits the elephant camp where he got to know the idiosyncrasies of the former war elephants of Siam.

Another stop will be the Taman Negara National Park in Malaysia. As the crow flies, just under 100 kilometres separate the untouched jungle regions and the iconic Petronas Towers in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Curse and blessing alike, there are more than 40 volcanoes on Java, the largest island in Indonesia. They pose a threat to millions of people and yet they also provide a nutrient-rich soil that delivers abundant harvests. The fate of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Borobudur and Prambanan are also at the mercy of the volcanoes’ whims.
