24 November
Uwaga! – Mozartovic (Dresden Jazz Days)

Many myths surround Mozart’s travels and his little-known yet extravagant journey from Vienna along the Danube towards the Balkans. There is talk of wild parties, jam sessions, dancing and emptying a bottle or two of Slivovitz plum brandy, or so the story goes. Mozart is said to have felt so at home in the culture there that he was quickly given the nickname “Mozartovic”.

The works he wrote at the time were kept tightly under wraps for a long time as the break with the Viennese Classical tradition was too radical and the instrumentation too unusual. In this phase he only ever composed for an ensemble of two violins, accordion, double bass and percussion. The demands he made of the players of the time were also quite unusual, with daring switches away from traditional Balkan sounds to the Viennese Classical style, wild jazz improvisations, often driven by almost disco-like grooves, the energy of a rock band coupled with the love of detail of a chamber ensemble. All the zest for life Mozart felt in the Balkans in what was probably the happiest phase of his life is reflected in these works. But the time was just not ripe for this kind of music. Fortunately, the original manuscripts have now re-surfaced – and as chance would have it, they suit Uwaga! down to a T!

  • Tickets also available in advance from the new online shop at shop.dresden-airport.de (German only), and from the airport information desk from October.
